Girl, 12, Killed After Being Thrown From SUV
August 7, 2006 - (CBS) ANAHEIM, Calif. A 12-year-old girl died Monday after being thrown from an SUV, which then crushed her when a busted tire caused her mother to lose control of the vehicle, officials said.
The girl, Mayra Ruby Galvan, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the Ford Expedition shortly before 11 a.m. onto the Riverside (91) Freeway in Anaheim just west of Kraemer Boulevard, said California Highway Patrol Officer Katrina Lundgren.
The red Expedition was in the fast lane heading east around 65 mph when "there was a left rear tread separation," Lundgren said. Eight people were in the car that was reportedly heading to the beach.
The girl's mother, Isabel Galvan, 41, of Anaheim, lost control, hit the center divider and rolled over, ejecting the girl, who was a passenger in the rear, Lundgren said.
The SUV rolled over the girl, Lundgren said. Witnesses and others were able to upright the vehicle, but the girl was declared dead at the scene.
Isabel Galvan, 16-year-old Joel Galvan, also of Anaheim and Alejandra Mota, 15, of Pico Rivera and Ernesto Mota, 11, of Pico Rivera, were transported to UCI Medical Center, according to CHP Officer Jennifer Hink.
The others in the vehicle, Vanessa Mota, 13, Carmen Mota, 40, and 2-year-old Samantha Mota, all of Pico Rivera, escaped injury, Hink said.
