Rollover sends two to Nyack Hospital
By LAURA INCALCATERRA
THE JOURNAL NEWS
June 6, 2007 - Two people were sent to Nyack Hospital last night after their sport utility vehicle rolled over on the Palisades Interstate Parkway.
The incident occurred at about 6:45 p.m. in the northbound lanes, between Exits 13 and 14 in Haverstraw town, State Trooper Christopher Kelly said.
Neither injury appeared to be life-threatening, he said.
The names of the victims were unavailable last night, Kelly said. Details of how the accident occurred were not available.
Emergency responders found the SUV on its roof when they arrived, Thiells Fire Department Capt. Jason Parente said.
The male driver and the female passenger were both already outside the vehicle when firefighters arrived, Parente said.
Rockland Paramedics and the Haverstraw Ambulance Corps also were dispatched to the scene.
The passenger suffered a severe cut to her arm, and the driver had scrapes and bruises. Both were treated at the scene.
Haverstraw Ambulance workers then took both to the hospital, 1st Lt. Anthony Masi said.
The accident first slowed and then halted northbound traffic for about an hour.
Several drivers called The Journal News to report they were stuck in stalled traffic, and to ask what was happening to delay their commute home.
Parente said between 25 and 30 volunteer firefighters responded because the 911 call reported two people trapped in a burning car.
Firefighters worked to disconnect the sport utility vehicle's battery cables to avoid a fire, Parente said.
They then used bleach to decontaminate the roadway where the injured passenger's blood had fallen.
Volunteers also used a substance called "Biosolve," which Parente said essentially neutralizes motor oil, antifreeze and other car fluids that can leak when an accident occurs.
